The 2 Ws

Are you clearly stating who you are and what you do?

Edge frequently receives descriptions from client
companies and candidates with multiple catch phrase
summaries placed as nouns.  Phrases such as "forward
thinking", "results oriented", and "creating value".

While these phrases may accurately reflect the
company or the person, they may not be the best words
for actual recruiting.  In today's  world, technology tools
are often used as a first step  to align companies with
the right people.

Recruiting tools focus on the 2 Ws - the Who and
What. Terms that clearly define an industry or
professional is the who and what.

A manufacturing company that says it is   "forward
thinking"  may consider "lean manufacturing firm" .
Alternately for an engineer, instead of "creating value",
consider  "six sigma black belt engineer".

So, now there's a third W, wrapping up.  If you feel
compelled to use catch phrases to summarize your who
and what, think about using the phrases as adjectives
instead of nouns.  And this results oriented, forward
thinking, creating value Recruiting Team recommends
using the phrases sparingly.

Pass It On
Do you remember kindergarten and first grade?  The
teacher placing the class in a circle, then allowing each
person to select from the gift box...remember?

And what delight when you selected first ensuring that
you got your favorite toy!  Sometimes, a little less
delight when your desired toy disappeared into the
hands of another.

While the class enjoyed their toys, the teacher would
tell a story about the importance of sharing toys,
happiness and laughter.  At the end of the story, the
teacher would ask the class if they want others to feel
good, and all would raise their hands.

Then it was time to share the happiness by passing on
the toy to another classmate.

Sometimes you receive the gift of  being the first to
receive job opportunities.  These opportunities may not
fit your talent, salary or geographical preference.  But, if
you stop and think about it for a moment, bet you can
think of someone who can benefit from the information.

So, the next time you receive a career opportunity, hear
about a job fair, or learn of a new career resource - Pass
it on!

The wide range of response is expected when it
comes to job appreciation.  But what is unexpected,
whether it is affection or disdain for the jobs, is the
level of passion.
